What causes hemorrhoids

Just what causes hemorrhoids?

Well, the fact is that no one really knows why hemorrhoids start to swell. It is also a fact that many people have hemorrhoids and there is no problem what so ever, it is only when these hemorrhoids swell when they become a problem.

There are basically two types of hemorrhoids which will determine what kind of help you need. As is with everything health related this is general advice and advice by a physician is always recommended.

The first type we will discuss is external hemorrhoids. In this case you may experience rectal pain and there may also be some bright red blood on toilet paper you've used after straining during a bowel movement. The straining may have irritated the swollen hemorrhoid and caused a tear or sore producing the blood.

In some cases a vein inside an external hemorrhoid can rupture. Blood may pool under the skin and form a hard and painful lump. When this happens it is called a thrombosed hemorrhoid and can also be very painful and needs to be treated.

Sometimes this treatment is going to be surgery although many have found relief in some non-traditional methods such as the ones recommended on this website.

The second type we will discuss are internal hemorrhoids. With internal hemorrhoids the most common symptom is rectal bleeding. You could find some bright red streaks of blood on toilet paper or in the toilet bowl after having even a normal bowel movement without much strain. Blood on the surface of the stool itself may also be visible.

Some other symptoms of internal hemorrhoids may include itching. This is a very common symptom as internal hemorrhoids often seep mucus and that causes itching.

Another symptom is skin irritation. Large hemorrhoids that protrude from the anus can secrete mucus which will cause mild irritation when rubbed or when pressure is applied.

Most cases of internal hemorrhoids are not painful. The reason is that the nerves inside the anal canal do not feel pain like the nerves located on the outside. They do however feel pressure so you will be aware.

However, be advised that large hemorrhoids that bulge from the anus can become painful if they swell and are squeezed by the muscles that control the anus. Severe pain may be a sign that the blood supply to the hemorrhoid is being cut off. This is called a strangulated hemorrhoid. Emergency treatment should be sought.
