Undergoing Diagnosis for Hemorrhoids

Are you experiencing pain in the anal or rectum area?

Are there spots of blood left after using the toilet bowl?

Are there red or swollen areas that are itchy and sensitive?

Are you experiencing discomfort during bowel movements?

If it’s a yes to all of the above, then it may be that you’re suffering from hemorrhoidal problems, may being the operative word. To make sure, however, that it is indeed what you think it is, there are tests or procedures that could give confirmation on those symptoms.

While a keen physician may be able to deduct the source or reason behind all that you’re feeling, most doctors prefer to be safe than sorry and may ask you to undergo tests or procedures. This is normal so don’t let your nerves go all high strung. Usually, you will be asked to undertake either of the two kinds of procedures mentioned below, which will help in identifying if what you have is hemorrhoids or something else.

COLONOSCOPY – From the name itself, and if you recall your Anatomy 101 class, you’d realize that this test would have to do something with your colon or large bowel. It’s a natural test to undergo when identifying if you’re suffering from hemorrhoidal problems because medical experts have found a link between irregular bowel movements with hemorrhoids. A gastroenterologist (quite a mouthful, isn’t it?) is usually the one who performs a colonoscopy. The process is rather delicate, in which a flexible tube is inserted into the anus, past the rectum until it reaches your colon. To make sure that the results would be accurate, doctors may beforehand give you certain instructions to assure that your colon is completely clean at the time you will undergo colonoscopy. If you are undergoing medication, do not forget to inform your physician about this and any other pertinent information of your medical history as it might affect the results of your test. If you don’t want the test to be for naught, be sure to follow the suggestions above.

FLEXIBLE SIGMOIDOSCOPY – It rather sounds intimidating, doesn’t it? The process is very much similar to colonoscopy – in other words, a tube will still have to be inserted inside your body.
You make think that undergoing such tests seem too much of a fuss to do just to ascertain if what you have are hemorrhoids or not but be warned because hemorrhoids is not a laughing matter at all. The pain can reach to the extremes, to the point that over the counter treatments prove futile and you’re forced to undergo operations just to have those hemorrhoids removed. Again, a proverb may be used to justify undergoing diagnosis: it’s better to be safe than sorry.
