Posted on August 2nd, 2007 in Treatment by hemroids

A hemorrhoid is the condition of swollen or inflamed veins in the rectum. Symptoms include a painful lump on the anus for external hemorrhoids and possible bleeding for internal hemorrhoids. There are several treatment options available and most of them can be readily done at home.

The first aid for hemorrhoids include warm baths lasting ten minutes several times a day to relieve the pain caused by the swelling. One could also opt at aromatherapy by adding twenty drops of lavender and juniper essential oils in the bath.

To soothe painful hemorrhoids, a compress of cold black tea may be applied on the affected area for several minutes.

Hemorrhoids, most of the time, are caused by constipation as excessive straining will cause the swelling of the anus. Avoiding constipation is advised by increasing fluid intake and increasing fiber in the diet. One should strictly follow taking in at least six to eight glasses of water a day. Increasing the amount of fruits, vegetables and whole grains in one’s diet will also help to prevent constipation.

Fiber supplements such as psyllium may also be taken. It is readily available in drugstores and may come in raw form to be dissolved in water or in capsule form. Exercise has also been proven to aid in the prevention of constipation.

Spicy food and chocolates have also been said to cause hemorrhoids. Therefore, totally avoiding these foods during a period of hemorrhoid attacks is recommended. After being fully cured, one should limit intake of these foods especially if one is predisposed to hemorrhoids. Red meat intake should also be reduced or totally eliminated. Fish and chicken are the best options for protein. Juice should also be incorporated in the diet especially those that are rich in Vitamin C. Fruit juice made of cherries, blackberries and blueberries may also be taken as they contain ingredients that strengthen the veins of the rectum.

In some cases, frequent recurrence of hemorrhoids may be caused by obesity. Therefore, exerting more efforts in reducing weight is highly recommended. Increasing physical activity and reducing food intake combined with eating healthy food would be helpful.

There are some home remedies that have been attested by some to be effective. One of them is applying vinegar or apple cider vinegar in the affected area. If full strength is not tolerable, one can dilute it with water.

In case of persistent pain despite application of home remedies mentioned above, one should consult a doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment. In most cases, a hemorrhoid cream or suppository will be prescribed for treatment and relief.
