Most often, when a person has hemorrhoids, treatments like high-fiber diet, topical medications, and good hygiene are effective. But there are instances of hemorrhoids in people that these treatments are not enough. There are people who respond to surgery to have a long-term relief from hemorrhoids.

For people that have large hemorrhoids that are bleeding and very painful, undergoing a surgery must be considered. There are some options regarding surgery for hemorrhoids.

Hemorrhoidectomy is a surgery that is done to remove the hemorrhoids from a person. When undergoing Hemorrhoidectomy, the doctor will make incisions around the anus of the person that the hemorrhoids will be cut away.

A local anesthesia or general anesthesia may be given to the person undergoing Hemorrhoidectomy. The person undergoing Hemorrhoidectomy is usually considered as an outpatient. After the surgery, the patient can already go home that same day.

A person will be relieved from all the swelling, pain, itching, and bleeding caused by hemorrhoids if the Hemorrhoidectomy surgery is done. Because of the incisions made, a person’s anal area will tender and painful. Recovery from Hemorrhoidectomy usually takes about two weeks and full recovery will be about six weeks.

Another surgery to treat hemorrhoids is the Procedure for Prolapsed and Hemorrhoids or PPH. This surgery is a minimally invasive procedure. When undergoing PPH, the prolapsed hemorrhoids are repositioned and the blood supply is cut off using a stapler-like device. With no blood flow, the hemorrhoids will slowly shrivel and eventually die. The benefits of a PPH surgery are a person will feel less pain, there is quicker recovery, less itching and bleeding, and there are few complications.

There also other minor surgery options that a person can choose from to remove hemorrhoids or reduce the size of hemorrhoids. There is a surgery using a special laser beam to burn the hemorrhoidal tissue away. The rubber band ligation is done through placing a rubber band around the base of the hemorrhoids. This will cut off the blood supply thus killing the hemorrhoidal tissue. A sclerotheraphy is a procedure where the blood vessels of the hemorrhoids will be injected with a chemical solution causing the vessels to shrink and disappear.

Although these minor surgery options will result to fewer complications and less pain for the person with hemorrhoids, still the best surgery for hemorrhoids is Hemorrhoidectomy, which will give better long-term results.

Any kind of surgery for hemorrhoids is common and safe to undertake. Before deciding which kind of surgery is right for you, it is still best to consult your doctor about it.
