Understanding Hemorrhoids

Posted on November 16th, 2007 in Information by hemroids

Hemorrhoids have been plaguing humanity for thousands of years now but there are still many misunderstandings about the disease. Many healthcare professionals and laypeople do not fully understand about the diseases that are associated with the anorectal area.

About ten million people in the United States alone experience hemorrhoids. About one-third of these people consult healthcare professionals for medical treatment thus resulting to about 1.5 million prescriptions given in a year.

The peak ages for hemorrhoids are between 45 to 65 years old for both men and women.

Crohn disease as well as ulcerative colitis can be associated with hemorrhoids. Many anorectal problems occur when a woman is pregnant and hemorrhoids are one of them.

Hemorrhoids are always present in every healthy individual. These will happen when a person’s vascular cushions are producing hemorrhoid symptoms. These symptoms happen when hemorrhoids are inflamed, enlarged, prolapsed, or thrombosed.

One cause of hemorrhoids is the low-fiber diet of a person that results to small-caliber stools, which gives much straining during defecation. The heavy pressure given due to straining will cause engorgement of the hemorrhoids because the venous return is being blocked.

Another cause of hemorrhoids is pregnancy and the abnormal high tension put on the internal sphincter muscle. Sitting for long periods on the toilet while removing bowel can result to enlarged hemorrhoids. Due to the weakening of a person’s support structures upon aging, prolapsed may occur. This usually happens as early as 30 years old.

Constipation and straining during bowel movement is the most common cause why hemorrhoids are formed. As hemorrhoids are always associated with pregnancy, there is still an unclear reason to it. After child delivery, these would just disappear. There is a concept that has been formed as to the relationship between the hemorrhoids and pregnancy. The concept is that the hormonal changes that happens when a woman becomes pregnant and the direct pressure on the anorectal area due to the weight of a pregnant woman’s womb are the main reasons why hemorrhoids are formed.

Portal hypertension also is often associated with hemorrhoids. When a person has portal hypertension, the anorectal varices are a common sight. Anorectal varices usually occur within the middle rectum between the connections of the portal system and the rectal veins. These anorectal varices rarely bleed. Treatments for this kind of hemorrhoids are often directed to the portal hypertension that the person is having.

Hemorrhoids may be a disease that is non-life-threatening but it is not good to set it aside, either. Causes of the formation of hemorrhoids are many and having knowledge concerning these can help you clear those misunderstandings as well as prevent them from happening.
