Thrombosed hemorrhoids

So you think you are suffering from hemorrhoids and are not sure exactly what they are or what that means. You have tried to research the problem online but get the run around with terms and scientific jargon that a person would need a medical degree to try and understand.

Well it shouldn't be that hard, and now it isn't. The answer is actually easier than you thought. Read on.

When people (even physicians) say a person is suffering from hemorrhoids, they are usually referring to the hemorrhoid symptoms and not the actual hemorrhoid itself. Because believe if or not, hemorrhoids are found in healthy individuals from all walks of life. Only when these vascular cushions become enlarged, inflamed, prolapsed or thrombosed that most people as well as doctors then call them "hemorrhoids". So you see it is actually a misnomer.

Thrombosed hemorrhoids are hemorrhoids that have clotted on the inside of the anus (a 'thrombus'). These clots form in the veins of the rectum just under the skin. External thrombosed hemorrhoids can be seen and/or felt. Sometimes they are soft. Other times they are hard.

Because they consist of the strangulation of a vein that is just under the skin, thrombosed hemorrhoids most commonly turn blue. Also, the outer skin can redden if the hemorrhoid in question is irritated and becomes inflamed. Although they are quite often very painful, thrombosed hemorrhoids do not normally require surgery.

Hemorrhoids can many times be successfully treated with warm baths, and creams. Most doctors will also tell you that the single greatest thing you can do to fight the symptoms of hemorrhoids and help in the prevention of hemorrhoids is to add more fiber in your diet. For more serious cases of thrombosed hemorrhoids which are not resolved with the previously mentioned treatments, surgery is usually advised so that the clot can be drained or removed.

So the next time you hear the term hemorrhoid remember that is commonly used when meaning to refer to the symptoms caused by hemorrhoids. Because now you know that hemorrhoids are present in healthy individuals. It is only when the vascular cushions produce symptoms that they are generically referred to as "hemorrhoids". You also now know that hemorrhoids generally cause painful symptoms when they are enlarged, inflamed, thrombosed, or prolapsed.

So now that you know, what can you do about it?
