Tell Me What I Don't Really Want to Know

Funnily enough, there is no straigh forward definition of Hemorroids. Apparently, you and I are not the only ones who don't want to talk about it. But I think that you will agree (especially if you have been unfortunate to have it at least once) that IS something worth knowing about, enough to at least avoid it.

Let me give you the localized picture of your backside where all of this is going on:

The RECTUM is the last 6 to 8 inches of your large intestines which stores solid waste until it is ready to leave the body. Stool passes from the rectum through the ANAL CANAL(the last 4 centimeters)on its way to the outside the world. The opening of the anal canal is called the ANUS.

Now unlike popular belief, the term hemorrhoids itself is not the disease. Literally, hemorrhoids, refers to the cushions of tissue within the anal canal that contain blood vessels as well as other tissues that surround it, consisting of muscle and elastic fibers. So hemorrhoids are normal. We all have it. But there is that 4% of us who are inflicted by the possible problems that can arise from inflamation or irritation to this area. These problems have been found to be equally prevalent among men and women between the ages of 45 and 65.

Hemorrhoidal blood vessels have a ready supply or arterial blood (as against venous blood) which explains why blood from hemorrhoidal bleeding is bright red and severe.

There are 2 differentiations of the condition called hemorroids. the first is internal, the second is external. Basically, it the hemorrhoids develops nearer to the rectum, it is considered internal. If it develops closer towards the anus, it is external.

While there are several theories about the causes for the hemorrhoids to become enlarged (such as inadequate intakes of fiber, constipation, pregnancy, tumors in the pelvis, etc.) a clear reason for why the hemorrhoids are enlarged as a product of these is yet unclear. The closest to an explanation yet has something to do with the passage of hard stool through the anal canal, which drags the hemorrhoidal cushions downwards. Another suggests that with aging comes the weakening ability of the supporting tissues to maintain the required support to anchor the hemorrhoids to the underlying muscles or the anal canal.

On the onset, there are varied ways of treating hemorrhoids depending on how severe the condition may be on a case to case basis. It is advised that to avoid the occurence in yourself, one should practice the diligence of increasing the intake of fibrous foods in their daily diet as well as that of water, to soften stool, to prevent strain on the anus and that area in general.

On the other hand, for those who have already experienced or ARE CURRENTLY disturbed by this condition, it would be best to consult your doctor for an examination that will determine the proper care needed by every individual, as there are a number of ways hemorrhoids can be treated. While there are some cases that would be sufficiently taken care of with the use of warm herbal baths and creams, others might require some form of medical procedure or surgery.

Either way, hemorrhoids is not popularly known to be life threatening. It can and will be treated. But who wants it, right?
