The Serious Side of Hemorrhoids

When one mentions the word hemorrhoids, piles or even lump in the rectus, what fills the mind are images of swollen wounds of the posterior and days filled with acute pain and embarrassment. Rarely does one see it become a cause of death.

But apparently it still can be.

First, what are hemorrhoids exactly?

Hemorrhoids appear as red and swollen looking veins near the anus or rectum. Sometimes, however, the condition is an internal one and the indication that it exists is the pain you’d suddenly feel during bowel movements or when you’re bleeding. When hemorrhoids are stretched or strangulated, they may protrude and that’s when they become visible. Its visibility could also be due to thrombosis – or the formation of clots in blood vessels. Nevertheless, the condition may become chronic when either of the two factors listed below transpires:

Profuse bleeding – as mentioned, bleeding is a symptom of internal hemorrhoids. While this is not accompanied with cutaneous (skin-related) pain, it can however be extremely dangerous when an immense quantity of blood is lost and leads to anemia.

Extreme pain – in some cases, the pain becomes unbearable that no amount of off the counter prescriptions can provide relief to the individual.

In both cases, the obvious choice of treatment is a surgical procedure to eliminate the hemorrhoids. Not everyone has the courage to face the needle bravely, especially when it’s for a condition that in normal situations would die a natural death after several days, or two weeks at the most. That’s why it’s hard for some individuals to take recourse on surgical treatments. It’s imperative however to remind yourself of the reality that hemorrhoids, although not essentially perilous to the human body, can still lead to death.

Upon surgery, a patient is injected with anesthesia. Complications during surgery rarely arise but it is possible and does so, in the form of bleeding, infection and urinary retention because of the anesthetic techniques used. After the operation, attention is given to bowel movements and the patient will be required to bathe in a tub for comfort and hygiene purposes. Painkillers or tranquilizers may be used to alleviate further discomfort.

Ultimately, while you may know your body best, what your gut instincts must coincide with at least one medical expert. That way, if you prefer to continue with conservative treatment of hemorrhoids, you’re assured of the fact that you’re not just prolonging the inevitable.
