A Family of Plants To Ease
Hemorrhoid Swelling
Hemorrhoid is a condition that should be taken seriously. It is an enlarged
vein in the anus or lower rectum. Those who have it suffer from pain and
bleeding every bowel movement. Fortunately, among the herbal aids applied
to soothe hemorrhoids, there is one group of medicinal plants that belong
to only one family, the Plantain, scientifically, plantaginaceae.
You may be familiar with some of them. They are known as Psyllium seed, Flea seed, Flea wort, Indian plantago, Buckhom, Ribgrass, Ripplegrass, Waybread, and Soldier’s herb. The last name may have a historic meaning. The medicinal weed came from Western Asia and Mediterranean region but it is now cultivated worldwide. Its highest height is less than two feet and it produces clusters of white-brown flowers among narrow leaves.
Traditionally, plantains are used to cure bites, stings, black spots , lymph gland swellings, uterine pains, headaches, fevers, flu, sore feet, eye and gum inflammations, bladder infections, epilepsy, and excessive bleeding. Plantains are indeed one of the most valuable medicinal weeds.
Today, plantains are still used for many other medicinal applications, particularly as expectorant and as an external antiseptic. The leaves, seeds, and husks are the plant parts often utilized to prepare medications. The fresh leaves are used to prepare juices.
Plantain juice is drank to relieve inflamed mucous membranes, particularly cystitis, diarrhea, and ling infections. The fresh leaves are also heated and moistened to create poultices. The poultices are dabbed on bee stings and on wounds that heal slowly. If a poultice is complicated to prepare, the washes from the diluted juice may be used instead. These washes are also excellent for external inflammations and sores.
The washes can also be used as gargles to relieve sore throats and various mouth inflammations. When the sore throat has escalated to become hard coughs, syrups from the juice can be used. This means that the juice to be drank should be a lot more concentrated than the regular juice. Tinctures can also be made out of the fresh leaves. These tinctures are astringent and effective for heavy mucus and allergy rhinitis.
Rhinitis is an inflammation of the nose and nasal passages. The seeds could be soaked in boiling water. And the infusion that was produced is good for urethritis, the inflammation of the urethra. And finally, ointments can be prepared from both leaves and seeds. The ointments are can successfully treat wounds, burns, and hemorrhoids.
The plantain, when taken internally, allows the bowel to retain water, making
it soft and easing the bowel movement.
Of course, when taking plantain internally, you should also follow it up
with plenty of water.
