Methods of Treating
Hemorrhoids
Normal and natural methods can be used to treat most hemorrhoids. When there is persistence of hemorrhoids, surgery is recommended to remove the hemorrhoid lump. In general, surgery is not recommended for treating hemorrhoids. In severe and persistent cases, hemorrhoid surgery is highly recommended.
The different types of treatment of hemorrhoids are:
Clot Removal
This is a minor type of external hemorrhoids surgery and can be performed in the doctor’s office. Anesthetic will be applied by the doctor before the cutting of the clot. As the wound heals, the area will be tender for a while but the hemorrhoid will be gone. A competent doctor can remove the clot with minimal complications and rarely there is no need for recovery time.
Rubber Band Ligation
This is performed for prolapsed internal hemorrhoids. Treatment can be done even without special preparation.
A small rubber band, positioned around the hemorrhoid, cuts off the flow of blood causing it to shrink. In multiple hemorrhoids, treatment is performed once every month.
Sclerotherapy
Sclerotheray is also called injection therapy. This procedure is used for treatment of small internal hemorrhoids. Injecting a hardening agent causes loss of circulation which will result to the hemorrhoid getting smaller.
When compared to the rubber band treatment, sclerotherapy is better recommended for multiple hemorrhoids since it can treat multiple areas at a single time. However, it does not have the same effect on larger hemorrhoids. It results to other complications like the development of sclerosed hemorrhoids. These conditions are, however, rare.
Infrared Coagulations
This is a procedure recommended for smaller hemorrhoids (external or internal). The hemorrhoids are burned using infrared light and electric current. The infrared light is aimed at the base of the hemorrhoid, causing it to clot and then shrink and finally disappear. Its complication is that due to the heat involved few people feel some pain during the treatment.
Hemorrhoidectomy
For severe cases of hemorrhoids, hemorrhoidectomy is usually recommended for extremely painful or itchy internal or external hemorrhoids.
During the treatment, either the scalpel or laser is used to remove hemorrhoid using anesthesia. Hospitalization is usually required and recovery period is necessary. The period of recovery after surgery usually lasts for about 3 to 10 days in the hospital and up to 4 weeks resting at home.
When treatment is improperly administered, hemorrhoidectomy can lead to such complications like severe pain, intense bleeding, scarring and even an inability to pass movement.
