Hemorrhoids Prevention
Though as stated earlier there is no real known cause and effect of hemorrhoids and generally speaking all advice is based solely on case studies, there are some basic things one can do and change in one's lifestyle to help prevent the irritation and growth of hemorrhoidal swelling.
In general it is believed that the best way to prevent hemorrhoids is to have normal bowel movements and do everything possible to eliminate the stress and pressure which exacerbates hemorrhoids. Both constipation and diarrhea are believed to magnify the symptoms of hemorrhoids and it is generally recommended that diarrhea be controlled with fiber and anti-motility drugs while constipation be controlled through diet and the use of stool softeners.
You will want to keep stools soft preventing constipation so they pass easily. Regular exercise, even daily walking, and an increase of fiber in your diet will help reduce constipation and straining by producing stools that are softer and easier to pass. Also you will want to empty your bowels as soon as you feel the need to do so. Do not delay thus increasing pressure on the anal sphincter; relieve yourself as soon as possible.
The average American diet contains less than 15 grams of fiber while most doctors recommend 20 to 30 grams. Supplemental fiber can be used to augment a normal diet though some good natural sources are fresh fruits, vegetables, grains, and cereals. Stool softeners and increased drinking of liquids also may also help though alcohol consumption can aggravate hemorrhoids so most medical doctors will advise against it.
Bear in mind though that in reality there is no solid scientific support for the benefits of fiber, liquids, or stool softeners. This advice is general and has shown to help in many cases of hemorrhoid relief.
