Hemorrhoids FAQ

What are Hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids are blood vessels that are normally present inside the anus and its surroundings including the lower rectum. When under pressure, hemorrhoids stretch and become swollen. In this aspect, they are very similar to varicose veins in the legs.

When straining during a bowel movement, pressure increases in the anus and this result to swelling of the hemorrhoids. Pregnancy, aging, diarrhea, heredity and chronic constipation all contribute to hemorrhoids.

There are external hemorrhoids (occurring under the skin around the anus) and internal hemorrhoids (inside the anus). An internal hemorrhoid becomes a prolapsing hemorrhoid when it protrudes through the anus.
